Participation in sports allows kids to make lasting friendships, develop communication skills, feel a sense of community and learn to respect their teammates and coaches.  In addition there is nothing better for their physical health than being active.

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF), KidSport Alberta & Sport Central have teamed up to launch the KidSport Oil Country Hockey Assist Program! This initiative will support communities across Oil Country by alleviating the cost of playing hockey for kids from low-income families and underrepresented groups. The primary reason Sport Central was launched in 1991 was to address the problem of kids being excluded from sports because of the cost to play. Our Founders knew they couldn’t address all the costs involved so they chose to focus on the equipment needed and providing it for free to struggling families. KidSport Canada was formed in 1993 to remove the barrier of registration costs.  Over the past year, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has taken a giant step in funding this Hockey Assist Program to add up to 1,600 new hockey players to the game from Red Deer to the north. Sport Central is prepared to do all we can to support the program by offering to outfit the children who sign up to play and need equipment. We acknowledge and give thanks to other partners in this project: Rosenau Transport, Hockey Alberta, and the Indigenous Sport Council of Canada (ISCC).

Together, we will ensure that ALL kids in Oil Country can play hockey.

Thanks to this program, we anticipate having 1000 (last year we served 4,292) extra children to help with hockey equipment this year. As you can appreciate, there are great costs involved in helping over 5000 children; many hours of fitting, extra space, extra staff. Also, there is a huge need for equipment.  Consider making a donation by clicking below.
